摘 要 |
The author is Dr. Neil Reid‚ who is currently working at New Zealand Council for Educational Research. He first describes the flourishing culture of New Zealand aborigines-the Maoris and the South Pacific Islanders-before the influence of European culture. He also touches on current aboriginal cultures under the influence of imperialism. He then points out that western-oriented instruments for psychological evaluation cannot be applied on gifted Polynesian children and how Western-oriented teachers often underestimate Polynesian cultures. Meanwhile‚ Polynesian parents lack the determination and experience to voice their opinion on how important it is that children receive education. In the end‚ the author proposes an educational system that would acknowledge and value different cultures. She also stresses on the need for education to accept cultural differences‚ and to maintain a broader conception of giftedness. |
