摘  要 This paper aims to introduce the basic concepts and theories of metacognition for reference of future researches. The theory is approached from four different dimensions: 1) the definition problems of metacognition. The disparities between definitions may lead to different methodologies and hence variations between the implications of different researches. 2) Information processing‚ cognitive structure‚ cognitive behavior and psychometrics are discussed in terms of their interpretations of metacognition and their theory basis and framework. Since all four approaches have compiled a huge database‚ the author did not prompt into comparing their strengths and weaknesses. 3) Due to the difference in age‚ source of cognition‚ knowledge acquired‚ significant and the essence of cognitive activities‚ studies of metacognition of children and adults vary. 4) Researchers should be aware of the limitations and controversies facing current studies on metacognition‚ and should adopt different analysis and subjects in their researches.
